Cheng-Hsien Liu, Ph.D. | Co-Founder
Dr. Cheng-Hsien Liu is a Distinguished Professor at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and the Co-Founder of Pythia Biotech. He received both his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and his Master degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, where he focused his research on high-performance MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors under the supervision of Professor Thomas Kenny (Richard W. Weiland Professor in the School of Engineering, Stanford University).
Since joining National Tsing Hua University in 2000, Professor Liu has long been dedicated to cutting-edge research in MEMS, biomedical microsystems, microfluidic chips, organ-on-chips, and biomedical instrumentation. His research achievements are widely applied in disease modeling, drug development, biomedical analysis, and precision medicine. He also served as the CEO of the Industry-Academia-Research Alliance of the College of Engineering at NTHU, where he actively promoted the integration of academic achievements with industry needs, accelerating the translation and commercialization of innovative technologies.
In recent years, Professor Liu has been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including winning the "Outstanding Research Award" from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) twice, the "Outstanding Engineering Professor Award" from the Chinese Institute of Engineers, the " Outstanding Industry-Academic Research Award" from National Tsing Hua University, "NTHU Excellent Award for Industry-Academic Cooperation ", the "Outstanding Industry-Academia Research Award" from College of Engineering at National Tsing Hua University. He was also awarded by the Boehringer Ingelheim "Grass Roots Bio-Entrepreneurship Support Program". Furthermore, he has consistently secured and led national research projects (such as the NSC National Nanotechnology Program, the Technology Development Programs for Academia supported by R.O.C. Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Engineering-Technology Leap Program supported by R.O.C. Ministry of Science and Technology to boost elite mature scholars and promote top research scholars to obtain breakthrough and state-of-the-art research results in the field of engineering and technology), as well as the NTHU-supported " Interdisciplinary Integration of Advanced Medical Technology (Medical+X) Program". The organ-on-chip and microphysiological system technologies developed by his team have also won the Future Tech Awards and multiple National Innovation Awards.
As a key inventor of the Tumor-Microenvironment-Chip platform, Professor Liu leverages his expertise in microfluidics, biomedical chips, organs-on-chips, and microphysiological systems to play a pivotal role in developing the technologies that underpin human-relevant tumor microenvironment models, providing a strong foundation for Pythia Biotech to advance cancer research, drug development, and precision medicine.
